Last semester I did a lesson about poverty and helping the needy. I encouraged my students to think of ways they could help out in the community. Dave and I wanted to do something special with my students with it being Christmas. So on Christmas Eve we invited my students to come join us sing songs and spend time with 爷爷 & 奶奶's (grandpas and grandmas) at a nearby nursing home and then go back to David's house for a party.
It was the first time my students had ever done something like this. They were so nervous when we met at the bus station. David came along and we practiced our songs on the side of the street (you wouldn't believe the crowd we drew).
The director said that sometimes a people from a local church would come and visit but this was a first for students.
The doctors introduced us to this grandma and said she is 107 years old and loves Jesus! |
Some of the grandmas recongized the songs we were singing as hymns and realized that Dave and I were believers. Some of the grandmas and grandpas joined in singing.
Some of the people there couldn't understand mandarin Chinese, they only spoke the local province dialect (闽南话 min nan hua) which Dave and I can't speak or understand. But thankfully a few of my students were from this province came to the rescue! They were able to communicate and love on on them in their mother tongue.
